House Remodelling & Extension
in a Conservation Area
St Andrew's Road, Cambridge
P R O J E C T S

This project is a remodelling and extension of a 1930s semi-detached house in the Chesterton Conservation Area of Cambridge to provide accommodation for a young family and visiting relative. The approach was to create a striking triptych of angular metal clad boxes to the rear, cascading to a triangular pool (for summer cooling) taking inspiration from West African graphic print designs of the Client. A side extension incorporates the reconfigured vertical circulation and new Corten steel staircase providing access to all levels. Full width doors also provide access to the rear garden for bikes and bins as well as buggy access to the House. The new lower level extension is designed with polished concrete floors and robust walls to respond to the potential for flooding (as the property is just on the edge of the River Cam Flood Zone area).
