Mirror Pod Extension to Grade II Listed Thatched Cottage

“The Panel considers the scheme to be interesting and bold, that is dynamic and fluid, utilising opportunities presented in the existing landscape and context, thereby helping to raise standards of design with relation to heritage assets”

South Cambridgeshire District Council - Design Enabling Panel

This project involves a contemporary 'spaceship' extension to a Grade II Listed thatched Cottage in Fen Ditton (just outside Cambridge). A polished metal 'pod' provides 21st Century living accommodation to the 19th Century thatched cottage. A steel framed and timber shell (originally conceived with cross laminated timber) is clad in polished reflective metal panels with matching mirror finished flush glazed windows with the design intent of making it visually 'disappear' into its historic context. The plan is orientated to provide views through the adjacent Pool House across open meadows to the River Cam. A glazed link staircase provides access to the reconfigured first floor of the Cottage utilising an existing thatched dormer.
